LENS + CLAY

As a young artist I was immensely attracted to the physical processes involved in the different art forms. In high school it was analogue photography: the mixing of chemicals during the film’s development and the handling of industrial equipment used in the printing process. As a ceramic artist in college, I was equally excited to get my hands dirty while studying wheel throwing and learning how to sculpt with clay.

BRUSH + PENCIL

There is nothing more exciting to me than playing with paint, pen and pencil. I could spend hours shading with pen and pencil: ink, charcoal, graphite, colored pencils. I studied drawing and oil painting in college and learned how to paint with watercolors. A lot of the skills I learned with colored pencils became a valuable asset when transitioning to digital art and when designing cards for monfric paper.

CONCEPTUAL

Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols, how they’re used and how they’re interpreted. As an artist, I find myself having to communicate complex ideas in symbols and signs, in the shape and form of an object, the color of said object and its layout—or in the way it relates to the other objects and colors around it. This is one of my favorite aspects of art.

With “Getting Rid of Everything” I added layers upon layers of pen strokes and watercolors over my original symbol to illustrate the evolutionary journey of a simple symbol.
